Animation School in Bangkok

Animation is a big thing in the film and entertainment business. America and Japan especially, are notable for many famous animation works. Just like anyone else in other countries, Thai people enjoy watching action-packed movies with visual effects as well as 3D animations. So Thais love animation, but can they create them as well? If you ever get a chance to stroll into a Thai art class, you will see that Thai students’ artistic abilities are just as good as anyone else’s. But then again, the beauty of art is in the eyes of the beholder. There have been many occasions where Thai students have showcased their animation works in contests both locally and abroad. But why then are Thai animations not as famous as American’s Walt Disney or the Japanese’s Doraemon?

Thai students have the technical skills to create realistic computer-generated effects and character models. On the other hand, if you were to watch American’s Toy Story and Thai’s Khan Kluay animations, you’ll notice the difference. It’s not the artwork per se, because both animations differ in styles and both are nicely designed. The difference lies in the plot and the emotion that the characters in the films portrayed. Recall the classic cartoons such as The Flintstones or Snoopy. The drawings for those cartoons are not what one would call absolutely-realistic or phenomenal, yet people still enjoy watching them. Why is that? Because the storyline is funny, and people can relate to the characters in those cartoons which makes them dear to heart.

Thailand’s education system however, focuses too much on the coursework rather than critical thinking. Same goes with some animation schools where completing the project and making it look “pretty” is considered more important than making it “come alive”. This can make a huge difference between an affectionate memorable animation versus just another pretty-looking film with animation characters that maneuver realistically.

As animation is gaining increased popularity in Thailand, more animation schools have been established to train future-to-be Thai animators. 3D animation is currently the trend where Maya and 3D Studio Max are the programs being used. Animation school in Bangkok such as Siam Computer and Language School, teaches not only the animation programs, but they also teach the English language. This will be beneficial for Thai students who are seeking to further their animation studies overseas. Knowing the language and having the basic animation skills will make life a whole lot easier when pursuing education abroad.

Thailand is a culturally-oriented country. The concepts of saving face and blending in with the crowd are heavily emphasized. As a result, this may put restriction on the freedom to be different or create something different. Although embracing one’s culture is important, but individual should not be afraid to also embrace his or her individuality and unique skills. And sometimes, it’s okay to create animation cartoon that deviates itself from the norm. Look at Snoopy. Now that’s no ordinary cartoon dog. He’s a beagle that sleeps on the roof of his doghouse, he can think, he has proven himself smarter than his owner, and he’s even a writer.

Siam Computer and Language School has been appointed to be the authorized software Training Center for design and animation by Autodesk, the multinational corporation of the United States that develops AutoCAD, MAYA, and 3ds MAX.
