List of words that Thai people often mispronounce:

  1. Devil ---- Thais will pronounce this word as “day-veel”
  2. Evil --- Similar to the word Devil, Thais will most likely pronounce Evil as “ae-veel”
  3. Angel --- Thais tend to read this word as “ang-jale”.
  4. Sugar--- This word should be ranked as the #1 most mispronounced word in Thailand. Sugar becomes “shoo-gar”.
  5. Richard--- Mr. Richard becomes Mr. “Rich-shard”.
  6. Susan ---- Susan becomes “Soo-sahn”. As a matter of fact, many of the names that end in “-an” will be pronounced as “ahn”  instead of “en”. Example: Nathan is “Na-tahn” and Stephan is pronounced as “Stay-fahn”.
  7. Bubble, double and many words that end with “le” or “al” are read as an “n” sound in Thai. For example: Bubble becomes “bub-buhn”, Central becomes “Sen-tahn”.
  8. Thais may have trouble pronouncing the “l” and the “r” sound. They may have trouble pronouncing let’s say, the worddrill”. Because of the “l” sound at the end of this word, drill will be read as “drin” or “drew”, and in some cases, “drael”.
  9. Horse---- Thais pronounce this word as “hawrse”
  10. Milk----Another difficult word to pronounce for Thais (who are just starting to learn English). You will probably hear variety of pronunciations with this word from “min” to “mew” to “meewk”.
