English Fad in Thailand

There are many reasons why Thai people are eager to study English. It could be because they want to continue their education abroad. Perhaps for some people their workplace requires it. For others it is a skill which they may want to add with their list of other skills. While it’s true that many Thais would like to learn English as a requirement for their school or job, but there are also a handful of those who wanted to learn English for fashion’s sake. For those of you who have been to Thailand (specifically to Bangkok), you will see the impact that pop culture has on the Thai youths. By “pop culture” we are referring to things like music, social media, and fashion trend. English is part of this “pop culture”. How so? To see the point more clearly we have to venture into the teen’s world.

Almost all the popular teen music will incorporate English into their lyrics; usually it’s the rapping portion of the song. In some music, the teen singers would tweak the pronunciation of the words in their lyrics to make it sound more “international”. Today's pop music may generate complaints from some parents who get the impression that modern Thai youths are abusing the language  i.e. mispronouncing the words on purpose in order to sound "cool".

To some Thais, another hit trend is to be able to study abroad. In some of their opinions, students who go to the U.K. or the U.S. are considered cool, smart, and sophisticated. It is a good thing that Thai youngsters are showing interest in the English language whether it’s in the form of making music or traveling abroad. It is a good start, although trying to follow the trend and appearing “hip” should not be the sole reason for wanting to learn English. It is crucial that Thai students realized that the real benefits for learning English—that is, it is one of the instruments that will guide them toward a higher position career and a better future.
